First, create a budget based on your maintenance loan and other incomes, so you know how much you have to spend each month. Make sure to take out any bills, living costs, travel expenses, etc. but also put aside a little extra in case of emergencies.
Whatever is left you can then use to go out and have fun with friends or spend on things you really need. This way all your bills and essential purchases for each month will be covered and you won’t have to worry about running out of money, but you can also go and enjoy yourself. After all, that’s what university is all about!
What are some of my other tips?
1. Take lunch to university
Whilst going out to eat with friends while you’re at university is fun and a great way to try out new places, it can get very expensive and after a while, you might struggle to afford it. Instead, I plan ahead when I’m going out with friends, and on the days that I don’t have any plans, I make my lunch before going to university. You’ll be surprised how much money it saves you! But remember to experiment with your lunches and make them interesting so you don’t get tempted to go out and buy something else!
2. Get a student railcard
If you’re travelling a lot and your train tickets are adding up, why not buy yourself a student railcard and get a 1/3 off train tickets. Pay an upfront fee of £30.00 a year, and for each ticket you buy you’ll get 1/3 off. You’ll be surprised at how much money it saves you and you’ll quickly make your £30.00 fee back!
3. Get a student Microsoft 365 account
Microsoft 365 offers a student package that gives you all the Microsoft essentials for free… yes that’s right, for free! Just make an account using your student email and you’re good to go. This is an incredible saving of around £60.00 a year and really helps if you’re on a tight budget.
4. Download UNiDAYS and get student discounts
UNiDAYS is a great app for getting student discounts at all your favourite shops! Just create an account using your student email and get browsing! The app also gives you discounts at restaurants and tech essentials making it a great all-rounder and a student’s dream app.
5. Get a Pret Coffee Subscription
If you’re a massive fan of coffee like me and you’re going into London a lot, get yourself a Pret Coffee Subscription. It’s just £25.00 per month and you get 5 coffees or barista-made drinks each day! As you can see this is an incredible saving and means you get to treat yourself to your favourite drinks without breaking your bank account. Enjoy!
